In Singapore, all swimming pools, private or public, are required to go through a water testing process at least once a year. This is to keep the swimming pool clean, fresh and safe for recreational use. Swimming pool water testing and inspection ensures that the hygiene content and quality of the water in the pool meet the required pH, alkalinity and chlorine levels prior to implementing the most suitable water treatment maintenance solution.
pH or “potential of Hydrogen” is a scale that specifies how acidic or base a water-based solution is, for example, as is the case of water in the swimming pool. Acidic water has lower pH, while base ones have a higher pH. Alkalinity, meanwhile, is the chemical measurement of the water’s ability to neutralise acids, and also measures the water’s capacity to resist changes in pH with the addition of acids or bases. Low alkalinity could cause swimmers to experience skin sensitivity, while a highly alkaline pool can cause the water to be cloudy.
